ABOUT LIVE LIKE LOU

The Live Like Lou Foundation is a national nonprofit organization whose mission is to create and connect communities to stimulate emerging research and uniquely support families affected by Lou Gehrig’s disease. We do this work in honor of our namesake, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer, and Luckiest Man, Lou Gehrig, and the more than 20,000 people living with the 100% fatal disease of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) each day across North America. Our vision to leave ALS better than we found it and we do this in three main ways:

  1. Provide meaningful support to people living with ALS and their families through our volunteer program, Connect and Serve, matching volunteers with families for one-time or short-term projects in and around the home; Iron Horse Scholarships for dependents of ALS warriors to pursue higher education; a partnership with Hope Loves Company camps for children in ALS families; financial grants to offset the burden that often comes with a of Lou Gehrig’s disease diagnosis.
  2. Invest in ALS research to find treatments or cures by attracting and retaining early-career ALS researchers and encouraging novel and pre-clinical scientific collaborations through our partnership grants, career development awards, postdoctoral fellowships, and emerging ALS investigator collaboration and learning events.
  3. Amplify Lou Gehrig’s story, his legacy, and what it means to Live Like Lou, through meaningful philanthropic partnerships, including Lou Gehrig’s Fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, with 170,000 living members, 14,000 undergraduates on nearly 200 college campuses; and our growing communities of support through ALS families, ALS researchers, and industry partners.

The Live Like Lou Foundation was established in 2017-18 after experiencing success with its grassroots efforts in western Pennsylvania to honor its namesake, Lou Gehrig, and advance research and support of those impacted by Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS). Founded by Neil and Suzanne Alexander, Neil—like Lou Gehrig—was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and both men courageously lived with ALS.
