Connect and Serve Program

The Connect & Serve Program matches ALS families with dedicated volunteers who are ready to help with one-time or short-term home projects. In partnership with Lou Gehrig's fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, Live Like Lou has hundreds of volunteers throughout North America who have registered to serve ALS families in their communities.

When your ALS family registers with the Live Like Lou Foundation, we recruit a volunteer near your home. Once matched, you and your volunteer coordinate directly to schedule the project.

  • Outdoor repairs
  • Painting

  • Spring cleaning

How it works:

  1. Register with Live Like Lou.
  2. We identify a volunteer near you.
  3. Once matched, you coordinate the project directly with your volunteer.

Talk to me, goose!

We partnered with David Betts, creator of the innovative Talk to Me, Goose! app to provide it free of charge to Live Like Lou-registered ALS families.

Available on iOS and Android, Talk to Me, Goose! helps individuals express themselves and share stories using advanced text-to-speech and personal voice cloning, even if their natural speech changes.

To gain access to Talk to Me, Goose! please make sure you are registered with Live Like Lou. If you are already registered, please click 'already registered' below. It will prompt you to email us. In the email, let us know whether you need access to iOS or Android, and whether you need it with or without ElevenLabs.

Iron Horse Scholarship

Iron Horse Scholarships support the dependents of individuals with ALS by providing financial assistance for their post-secondary education. Students may apply before or within five years of their loved one’s death from ALS.

Named in honor of Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive Major League Baseball games played, the scholarship provides up to $2,130 per semester for up to four years (or eight semesters).

There are no age or GPA requirements. However, the Live Like Lou Iron Horse Scholarship Selection Committee gives preference to applicants who demonstrate financial need and academic promise. Each year, at least one award is reserved for a student pursuing a career that will benefit the ALS community. Scholarship recipients are asked to serve as ambassadors for the Live Like Lou Foundation and the ALS community during their award period (approximately 10 hours of engagement per year).

Finalists who are not selected for a full Iron Horse Scholarship may receive one-time financial support.

Submitting an application does not guarantee selection or renewal. All scholarship payments are made directly to the recipient’s institution of higher education.

Quality-of-Life grants

The Live Like Lou Foundation recognizes that an ALS diagnosis often brings unexpected expenses.

In 2022, Live Like Lou launched a Home Improvement grant program to help ALS families make necessary home improvements.

In 2025, the program expanded to include Quality-of-Life grants, allowing families to apply for support addressing a broader range of needs.

These grants may help cover expenses such as home accessibility improvements, respite care, extracurricular activities for children, payments toward an accessible vehicle, and other needs that improve day-to-day quality of life. Awards are available for up to $2,500 per family.

THE 2026 APPLICATION IS NOW CLOSED. REGISTER TO BE NOTIFIED ABOUT THE NEXT APPLICATION CYCLE.
