Do you know a college baseball player who goes above and beyond?

An athlete who works hard on the field and dedicates himself to community service, philanthropy, and making a lasting impact. College coaches, administrators, and university staff are invited to nominate deserving players for the 2026 Lou Gehrig Community Impact Team, an award that recognizes outstanding college baseball players nationwide.

Every year, the Lou Gehrig Community Impact Team spotlights nine student-athletes across NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA baseball programs whose character reflects the qualities that made Lou Gehrig a legend, on and off the field. Honorees embody:

  • Dedication to community service and philanthropy
  • Generosity of spirit and leadership
  • Significant contributions to their team's success

The 2026 roster will be announced in February, and one individual will be chosen as Team Captain. This special honor extends beyond recognition: the Team Captain's college or university will have the opportunity to host an on-field ceremony where the Live Like Lou Foundation will present a $4,000 gift to support a local ALS family. Every Lou Gehrig Community Impact Team member will also receive a commemorative plaque as a tribute to their leadership, service, and impact.

Honoring Athletes Making a Difference

Columbia baseball player Cole Fellows joins Live Like Lou staff and board members to present Beth Grossman and her daughters with a Quality-of-Life Grant!

Last year, Columbia University outfielder Cole Fellows was named Captain of the 2025 Lou Gehrig Community Impact Team. His recognition translated into real change for a family impacted by ALS.

Beth, diagnosed with familial ALS in 2024 and passed away in June 2025, received care at the Eleanor and Lou Gehrig ALS Center at Columbia University. Beth's family began vital home renovations through the grant provided in honor of Fellows’ captaincy, including making her bathroom more accessible.

“It would mean having a space designed for her, rather than a space she is forced to try and make work,” said her daughter Ellie. The renovations gave Beth independence, dignity, and the comfort of a space made specifically for her needs.

Fellows called the honor both humbling and motivating:

“It’s an incredible honor to receive this award. I’ve been inspired by the service efforts of other student-athletes, and I look forward to making a difference here in New York. As student-athletes, we have a unique platform to support causes bigger than ourselves. Together, we can strike out ALS.”

Continuing Lou Gehrig’s Legacy

The Lou Gehrig Community Impact Team was introduced in 2024 through a partnership between the Live Like Lou Foundation and Gehrig’s Fraternity, Phi Delta Theta. Together they created this recognition program to shine a light on collegiate baseball players who embody the values of service, compassion, and teamwork that Lou Gehrig carried throughout his life.

How to Nominate a Player

Nominations for the 2026 roster are now open and will be accepted until December 1, 2025 and must be submitted by a coach, administrator, or university staff. Honorees will be announced in February 2026 ahead of the college baseball season.

College baseball is more than competition; it’s about leaving a mark that goes far beyond the diamond. The Lou Gehrig Community Impact Team celebrates the athletes who use their talents, character, and platform to inspire others and serve families in the fight against ALS.
