Take a behind-the-scenes look at how your support continues to fuel the Live Like Lou Foundation's work in this edition of In the Dugout.

The Live Like Lou Foundation is proud to announce Dr. Zevik Melamed, Principal Investigator and Head of the Laboratory of Molecular and Translational Neuroscience at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as the recipient of the 2025 Live Like Lou Career Development Award.

This award is designed to encourage and expand the number of researchers focusing on ALS. The Live Like Lou Career Development Award provides up to $100,000 per year for two years to tenure-track investigators within five years of launching their own independent laboratories.

Dr. Melamed’s project explores how cellular stress and protein imbalance contribute to motor neuron damage in ALS. By uncovering how specific molecular pathways drive neurodegeneration, his work aims to identify new drug targets that could slow or stop the progression of ALS.

As part of our For the Good campaign, the Live Like Lou College Baseball Classics bring together fans and friends for the good of the ALS community. Each tournament provides vital support for ALS families in the host cities and in the communities of the participating teams.

Jacksonville, Florida – Louisiana State University, University of Central Florida, Indiana University, and University of Notre Dame

Las Vegas, Nevada – University of Oregon, University of Arizona, Vanderbilt University, and University of California, Irvine

If you’re a fan of one of these teams, we’d love for you to join us in Jacksonville or Las Vegas! And if you’re an ALS family in either city, please fill out this form to show your interest—we’d be honored to connect with you.

This month, we spotlight David Betts, the creator of Talk to Me, Goose! and Fable’s Adventures. A longtime partner in Deloitte Consulting LLP’s Life Sciences and Health Care business, David spent his career making health care more human, a mission that continues through the tools he created after his ALS diagnosis.

Talk to Me, Goose! is an AI-enabled mobile text-to-speech application designed to support communication for people who need it.

Fable’s Adventures is a spin-off of Talk to Me, Goose!, a storytelling app for kids of all ages. With it, families can create, illustrate, and read stories aloud in richly expressive voices, all while supporting people living with ALS with every download and subscription.

On Saturday, January 31, athletes and supporters across gyms nationwide joined together for The Lou Workout, a powerful event with one purpose: to leave ALS better than we found it.
Thanks to the incredible support of athletes, gyms, and families across the country, we raised $105,000 to fuel Live Like Lou’s ALS family programs and critical ALS research.

In the past four years of The Lou, participants have raised $282,000—doubling the number of scholarships Live Like Lou has been able to award to financial dependents of people living with ALS as they pursue their secondary education goals.
