ALS Families

We were honored to spend a beautiful Friday evening honoring the ALS community at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Indiana, as the Indianapolis Indians took on the Columbus Clippers. The Indians invited Live Like Lou to share about our mission and the Indianapolis Indians Charities matched funds to three Central Indiana families through our programs.

Following the Indians' victory, friends of Live Like Lou were invited to light the Friday night fireworks show as part of their "Spark for Change" moment telling fans about Lou Gehrig's legacy and honoring the ALS community.

Read more about the three ALS families who received funding through our programs last night:

Tavares and Eric Speer of Avon

Tavares was diagnosed with ALS in 2018. Eric works full-time, and together they pay out-of-pocket for a home health aide to support Tavares’ daily needs.

Tonight, Live Like Lou is honored to present the Speers with a $2,500 Quality-of-Life Grant, providing 71 hours of caregiving support. Thanks to the generosity of Indianapolis Indians Charities, this grant is being doubled-funding an additional 71 hours of care. We hope these funds bring you comfort and peace of mind.

Micah and Denise Johnson of Indianapolis

Micah was diagnosed with ALS last year at just 19 years old. Denise, a single mom to Micah and her two sisters, is working to secure a wheelchair-accessible van. Live Like Lou is pleased to support their need for a wheelchair accessible van with a $2,500 Quality-of-Life Grant for the van’s down payment, and Indianapolis Indians Charities are contributing another $2,500 to help update Micah’s bathroom for accessibility and safety. These grants will help Micah maintain her independence and ensure safe transportation for essential activities and medical appointments.

Evan and Tara Homan of Westfield

Evan, a senior at Westfield High School, lost his father, Jeff, to ALS in 2022. Inspired by his father’s determination, Evan excels as an elite athlete-currently ranked number 10 on the US Men’s National Team for speed rock climbing, with hopes for the 2028 US Olympic Team. As he heads to Indiana University this fall, Live Like Lou is proud to surprise Evan with the Iron Horse Scholarship, awarding $17,040 for his college education. Evan is among four Iron Horse Scholarship recipients in North America, selected from a competitive pool of more than 100 applicants. Indianapolis Indians Charities are also providing an additional $2,500 in support of his academic and athletic dreams. Congratulations, Evan—we can’t wait to follow your success!

Thank you to the Indianapolis Indians and Indianapolis Indians Charities for an incredible night of community, awareness, and recognition. We hope to make this an annual event!
