When Katie Pier’s dad was diagnosed with ALS, she knew she wanted to channel her love for running into something meaningful. On Saturday, November 2, 2025, Katie is taking on the New York City Marathon to raise funds for ALS research.
Katie and her dad shared a love of running. It was during their runs together that he first started to experience breathing difficulties, his earliest symptom of ALS. As the disease progressed, Katie became one of his caregivers.

“Although it was heartbreaking watching the disease progress, being able to help during the most difficult times was an honor,” said Katie.
Now, every step she takes reminds her of her dad and the special bond they shared. Her dedication to supporting ALS families reflects her belief in making life a little easier for others facing similar challenges.
As we honor caregivers this November, Katie’s message is simple but powerful:
“Spend time with your loved ones and prioritize your family.”
